Murmur Privacy

Murmur is local-first. The app does not send your speech, transcripts, or audio to Canopy Studio servers.
Local processing
Speech recognition runs on your Mac with OpenAI Whisper. No cloud transcription APIs are used.
The one-time model download
On first launch, Murmur downloads a speech recognition model once. It is about 150 MB to 3 GB, depending on your Mac's memory. The file comes from the public download server of OpenAI, the model's publisher, in the USA. This step leaves the EU. It is a plain file download: the server sees your IP address, as with any download. No audio, text or account is sent. The model is stored in ~/.cache/whisper/ on your Mac. After that, all transcription happens on your Mac.
Downloading Murmur
The Murmur download is moving to a new home and will be back on this site soon. The installer (DMG) will then be hosted on GitHub, in the USA, so that step will also leave the EU: GitHub will see your IP address when you download it, and GitHub's own privacy statement will apply. Murmur has no account and no analytics.
Local storage
Murmur stores data only on your Mac: settings (~/.murmur_config.json), transcription history (~/.murmur_history.json), and optional audio files (~/.murmur_audio/) when retention is enabled.
Your controls
In Murmur Settings you can disable saving history or audio, and delete all local Murmur data with one action.
This website
These Murmur pages are static marketing content. They do not collect Murmur app usage data.
Publisher and your rights
Murmur is published by Matthieu Brousse, a private person trading as Canopy Studio. We never receive your speech or transcripts. The publisher is the controller for any personal data you send us, for example in a support email. Support emails reach our mailbox at Gmail; the website privacy policy says who receives them and where. Contact details: legal notice.
You can ask to access, correct or delete that data. You can also lodge a complaint with the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
